Who we are
EndOfLifeCareers.org is an initiative of Buried in Work Charitable, which helps people prepare for and navigate the practical realities of death, estate organization, end-of-life planning, and what comes next.
We created this site to make the wide range of careers connected to death, dying, loss, care, remembrance, and estate administration easier to discover and understand.
What you will find here
- Roles. Every profession we cover, across six fields, with what the work involves, what it takes to qualify, and what makes someone a good fit.
- Schools and programs. Not only mortuary science: thanatology, end-of-life doula training, music thanatology, palliative care, Clinical Pastoral Education, forensic pathology fellowships and state apprenticeships. Searchable by pathway, state, credential, which career it trains for, and whether you can study at a distance.
- Certifications and licenses. What each credential means, who issues it, which careers it applies to, and crucially whether it is a license you must legally hold, a certification that proves competence, or training that simply teaches you the work.
- Scholarships. Funding, sorted by what the award actually pays for: tuition, continuing education, conference travel, research or leadership development.
- Events. Conferences, conventions and training workshops across the field.
- Spotlights. Women redefining what this work looks like, linked to the careers they work in.
- Articles and common questions. Guides and first-hand perspectives, which appear on the role pages they belong to rather than in a separate pile.
Everything is connected. A certification lists the careers it applies to, and those careers show the certification automatically. Find a school and you can see what it trains you for. Find a role and you can see where to study for it, what it pays for, who is doing it, and what you would need to hold before you could practice.
How we handle accuracy
Licensing rules, program requirements, and certification costs change, and they vary by state. We record what the issuing body or the school publishes, but we are a starting point, not an authority. Before you enroll, apply, or sit an exam, confirm the current requirements with the school, the credentialing body, and your state licensing board.
If you find something wrong, tell us. Corrections are the fastest thing we act on.
